We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we’ve also seen people sharing screenshots of…

— News from Google (@NewsFromGoogle) July 31, 2026

They basically said people uniquely trust Google Earth for a reliable view of the world… and then some folks started sharing screenshots that “appeared to violate our policies.” So they’re rolling it back while they figure out stronger guardrails. Watermarked, didn’t show up in the main view for other people, the usual.

Yeah no shit. Within hours people were planting nuclear plants in Iran, refugee camps on the Mexican border, bomb craters next to hospitals, collapsed Eiffel Towers, the whole menu. OSINT guy Henk van Ess was one of the first to point out how broken this was. He typed one sentence and the thing just… did it. No refusal, no “hey maybe don’t.”

One X user’s reply got far more likes than Google’s original post, saying:

You guys are living in a complete bubble. Step outside Silicon Valley for two seconds and you’ll realize no actual human wants AI sludge crammed into every corner of every product. Touch grass. People were already treating the fakes like real satellite evidence. Google spent twenty years making Earth the thing you check when something looks sus. That’s not innovation, that’s just asking for chaos.

They’ll probably bring it back eventually with more filters.
