They\u2019re starting in Las Vegas next month.<\/p>\n<p>Because nothing says progress like sitting in a car that can drive forwards <i>and<\/i> backwards with no way for you to grab the wheel if it decides the Strip is a boat ramp.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the NHTSA guy, Jonathan Morrison, explaining the whole campfire seating situation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Amazon&amp;apos;s Zoox robotaxis were approved to operate without steering wheels\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SJiLEIEMoTc?start=15&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These things have already been giving free rides in Vegas and San Francisco. Now they can actually bill you. Up to 2,500 a year for the next two years under a temporary exemption. Bidirectional, no wasted driver space, face-to-face seats so you can awkwardly lock eyes with strangers while the robot decides whether that school bus is real. But the second something weird happens \u2014 smoke, construction, fireworks that confuse the sensors \u2014 you\u2019re just a passenger with a really expensive view of your own helplessness.<br \/>\nStill\u2026 progress, I guess. Waymo\u2019s been out here with steering wheels for years. Tesla\u2019s still arguing about whether the Cybercab needs one. And Amazon just walked in, got the first pure no-wheel paid exemption, and is about to start collecting fares on the Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Would I get in one? Probably once. Windows down, finger hovering over whatever emergency button it has. After that I\u2019m walking. Or taking a regular Uber driven by a human who\u2019s at least capable of swearing at other drivers like a normal person.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, that\u2019s the news.
