We’ve got the usual suspects—state-sponsored hacking, a crypto heist that stole over a hundred million dollars with what sounds like the most boring scam imaginable, and the dark secrets of a former cyber kingpin.

It’s less of a digital battlefield out there and more like a massive, global, unsupervised elementary school playground where everyone is armed with a keyboard and an alarming lack of basic human ethics. Let’s talk about how utterly screwed we all are.

For those of you who just stumbled out of a cryogenic pod, this is where we dissect the week’s digital drama with the chillest, most deadpan commentary you’ll ever hear. No hyperbole, no screaming, just the cold, hard, kinda funny facts. We’re going deep on a multi-million-dollar crypto fleecing, the weirdly relatable life story of a Russian-speaking hacker, and how even the most boring government offices are getting absolutely slapped.

Let’s start with the money. Because, of course, the money is always where the comedy is.

So, the decentralized finance platform Balancer got absolutely rinsed for about $110 to $120 million this week. And what did the former CISA Director Chris Krebs call it? A “multi-million dollar heist”. Groundbreaking stuff, Chris. Thanks for the heads up.

The way they did it is what makes it so hilariously depressing. This wasn’t some zero-day, lightning-fast, high-tech laser-beam attack. Nope. This was exploiting a flaw that was known a couple of years ago. They literally just used a forgotten, dusty old backdoor.

The hacker—and you have to admire the Office Space level of subtle menace here—used “flash loans” to effectively skim fractions of pennies off the top at scale. Krebs says the best way to think about it is “a little bit like the movie Office Space and the scheme at the end where they shave off fractions of a penny”. It’s the digital equivalent, but instead of $300, it’s a hundred and twenty million. That takes a special kind of dedication to penny-pinching.

Krebs even mentions the “possible use of AI in writing the exploit code”. Great. Now we have to worry about a bored L.L.M. perfecting the art of the 0.0001% skim. Because if there’s one thing AI is great at, it’s soul-crushingly repetitive, slightly illegal tasks.

The ultimate irony, of course, is that DeFi, the thing designed to save us from “the man,” is also the reason they can’t get the money back. As Krebs pointed out, “you don’t have anybody to blame when something goes wrong and say you owe me my money back”. The benefit of decentralization is also the big bugaboo. It’s a flawless system, until a hundred million bucks just evaporates. Then it’s suddenly a “cautionary tale” about “broader systemic risk”. He’s in a low-security prison, learning English, getting fit, and seems generally unbothered. He has a “charming way about him”, but a massive disconnect on remorse. The BBC spoke to a victim, a small “mom and pop shop” called Liber’s Luggage. You put that to the criminal mastermind, and his response? “Yes, it’s all on insurance. I think the feeling is that western countries and companies they can handle it, doesn’t matter, there’s no victims here that’s not true.” What a beautiful, soul-crushingly entitled mentality.

The only time he showed any regret was when his crew hit a disabled children’s charity. Someone in the community hits a hospital, brags about a $20 million ransom, and suddenly, all the morals go out the window because a payday is a payday. Everyone goes for the hospital cash. It’s like a digital version of those nature documentaries, but instead of gazelles, it’s ransomware gangs chasing ambulances. It’s just… chef’s kiss deplorable.

Hey, if you’re enjoying this analysis of the world’s spiraling descent into digital chaos, do me a favor. This week was a geopolitical hacking shitshow.

First, you’ve got the IRGC, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, claiming they dismantled a hacking network tied to Mossad IRGC intelligence dismantles hacking network tied to Mossad. The details are always blurry on this stuff, but the pattern isn’t.

Israel and Iran are locked in this never-ending cyber-chess game where every other week, one claims they arrested someone or blew up a server. It’s just the digital extension of a very old feud. You can always count on those two to keep the state-sponsored digital espionage industry absolutely thriving. It’s like a guaranteed subscription model for state security firms.

But the real comedy here is how low the targets are getting. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, was hacked by a suspected foreign actor U.S. Congressional Budget Office hacked by suspected foreign actor. That’s the office that produces independent analyses of budgetary and economic issues. It’s the most boring, math-heavy office in all of Washington.

I mean, what’s the valuable data there? A spreadsheet that confirms we’re all still hopelessly in debt? Maybe the attacker just wanted to know the projected cost of the next five wars so they could plan their next five-year budget. The fact that a foreign actor is hacking the budget office tells you that even in the highest stakes spy games, sometimes, all you want is a little peek at the enemy’s projected overhead. It’s just profoundly sad and funny.

Now, for a brief moment of irony to cap things off. While all this hacking mayhem is going on—the $120 million heist, the geopolitical drama—you’d think the cybersecurity companies are keeping things secure with their piles of money. But Nope.

There’s more, verifiable, cyber security drama, when the pro-Hamas group Cyber Toufan, believed to be linked to Iran, dumped sensitive data from 36 Israeli-Australian defense projects. Pro-Hamas hackers claim breach of Israeli-Australian military systems. No, they hit the supply chain—a firm called MAYA technologies—and basically walked through an unlocked side door The hackers gained access not by breaking in, but by walking through an unlocked door. This resulted in the leak of classified plans for Australia’s $7 billion Redback fighting vehicles and details on systems like Rafael’s Iron Beam laser and Elbit’s turrets. They even claimed to have recorded meetings with sound and video for over a year.
