Ice makes the ground stiffer, so the waves zip through two to three times faster and bounce back like an echo. Stick a seismometer in the right spot and you can map how much ice is buried, down to hundreds of meters, without digging like a bunch of impatient toddlers.

This isn’t the first time we’ve known there’s ice up there. Back in 2009 NASA yeeted a rocket into a polar crater just to prove it. Here’s Anthony Colaprete from the LCROSS team announcing they actually found a meaningful amount of water:

They slammed a whole Centaur stage into Cabeus crater and still only got a few buckets worth in the plume. Now these new guys are saying we can just wait for the Moon to naturally vibrate and listen instead of bombing it every time. Lazy science, but efficient.

People on X already had takes. One of my favorites from the classic Nestlé era that still hits:

“Nestlé on their way to steal all the water from the Moon 30 seconds after it was discovered.”

Nestlé on their way to steal all the water from the Moon 30 seconds after it was discovered. pic.twitter.com/gKb1nRjYIN

— Tiger Tiger Burning Bright 🔥🍒 (@StargazerByakko) October 26, 2020

And another more recent one that made me actually chuckle:

“Come buy my moon water, the galaxy goddess uploaded it to my dreams. It will make your dick huge.”

I don't know why I keep working so hard. If I could just get rid of these pesky scruples, I could make up literally anything and rich morons would give me millions for it. Come buy my moon water, the galaxy goddess uploaded it to my dreams. It will make your dick huge.

— involuntary sentient (@stanimorph) August 6, 2026

Anyway. The practical part: NASA’s Artemis crew is supposed to land near the south pole in 2028. China’s Chang’e-7 is heading there later this year with an actual seismometer. If the models hold up, those instruments could tell them where the good ice is before anyone wastes a drill bit.

We’ve known the Moon rings like a bell for decades. Here’s a short NASA bit on how moonquakes work and why they last so long compared to Earthquakes:

So yeah. Instead of guessing or blasting holes, we’re about to just… listen for the good vibrations. If it works, future lunar bases get free water, oxygen, and rocket fuel without hauling every drop from Earth. If it doesn’t, at least we get more data on how the Moon’s insides rattle.

Smart move either way. Still weird that the best way to find ice on another world is to wait for it to have a little tremor and then eavesdrop.

Like, subscribe, and follow if you haven’t already.
